Many pet owners, groomers—and even equine professionals—blame their clipper when trimming doesn’t go smoothly. But often, it’s not the tool’s fault. Before replacing your blade or questioning your equipment, ask yourself: Was the coat properly prepared?
Poor coat preparation is the #1 reason behind clipper drag, blade dulling, and unsatisfactory results. Whether you’re grooming a Poodle or a Thoroughbred, proper prep makes the job faster, cleaner, and safer—before you even press the power button.
Grooming starts before the clipper is switched on. Dirt, tangles, and leftover undercoat all create resistance that can damage your blade and tug at the animal’s skin. A clean, conditioned, and completely dry coat is essential for a smooth clip.
This is especially true for large animals like horses. Dried sweat, compacted dust, and dense patches of winter coat can quickly clog a blade—especially on the shoulders, flanks, and legs.
Here's a proper wash sequence for grooming prep:
Brush before bathing: Untangle knots and mats while the coat is dry. Wetting a knotted coat will only lock the tangles in tighter.
Shampoo twice: First to remove dirt and oils, second to apply any treatment (e.g., whitening, protein, or coat-enhancing formulas).
Condition generously: Especially for long, curly, or thick coats. Conditioner smooths the cuticle layer, reduces tangles, and protects your blade by softening the hair shaft.
Note: Horses with longer winter coats or caked sweat buildup may benefit from a clarifying shampoo followed by a protein-based conditioner before clipping.
Skipping conditioner may save time—but it’ll cost you later when the blade jams mid-trim.
Never clip a damp coat. Moisture dulls blades fast and clogs combs. After towel-drying, use a professional-grade pet or equine dryer to fully evaporate moisture and blow out any loose undercoat or dander.
Bonus: Dryers help reveal remaining tangles and irregular patches before clipping begins—especially useful when dealing with large coat surfaces like on a horse’s hindquarters.
Even after washing and drying, some coats hold onto dead hair and subtle snags. These can block the blade or cause "chewing" instead of clean cutting.
Use this sequence:
Pin brush to check overall texture
Slicker brush to remove deeper knots
Comb test: If a metal grooming comb snags anywhere, don’t clip yet.
For horses or double-coated breeds, use a de-shedding rake to remove compacted hair in thick zones like the chest or croup.
Proper prep saves your blade, but care matters too. Here’s how to extend blade life:
Oil regularly: Before and after every grooming session, and after cleaning.
Clean thoroughly: Remove the blade, wipe away debris, and store only when dry and oiled.
Use the right blade for the job: Don’t expect a lightweight trimmer to do a full-body clip on a dense horse coat.
For professional horse grooming, high-torque clippers with A5-compatible detachable blades are ideal. LILIPROPET’s AC803 and AC804 models are built for that.
Note: A5 blades can be resharpened, while ceramic blades stay sharp longer but are non-sharpenable. Choose based on your usage style.
If the clipper tugs instead of glides:
Check if the coat is prepped and clean
Make sure the blade is sharp and oiled
Confirm you’re using a full-body clipper, not a lightweight trimmer
Re-check for undercoat or residual mats
Even non-shedding breeds—and horses—accumulate dead hair that won’t shed naturally. If not removed, it will jam blades and comb attachments.
A sharp blade is only as good as the coat it cuts. Proper prep—brushing, bathing, drying, detangling—can double your blade’s lifespan, improve grooming results, and keep your animal comfortable.
Whether you’re grooming pets at home or prepping a sport horse for competition, the best clipper experience begins long before you press “on.”
